Goal.

The direction or path, answering the question “How are we achieving our goals?”
Action.
The specific and measurable steps, answering the question “What steps do we need to take to achieve our goals?”
Each action includes a timeframe for completion and assigns a responsible department within the Town of Oro Valley to lead its implementation. This information is meant to be somewhat flexible, as priorities for each action may shift based on new guidance and resources. More information about the anticipated timeframe is provided at the bottom of this page.
The following is a list of policies and actions that support the goal and long-term vision for the community.
Policy O.1. Aim to reduce solid waste in all sectors through a combination of sustainable waste management practices, such as waste minimization, recycling, and composting.
The following actions will be implemented on an ongoing basis:

Provide information about recycling by:
Working with local waste management companies to identify and effectively communicate which materials can be recycled.
Updating the Town’s website to provide resources and education about recycling, reuse, and upcycling.
Promoting groups that reuse plastic waste for building materials, recycle batteries, electronics, energy-intensive appliances, or other household goods.
Engaging the library and other organizations to distribute information or provide educational workshops, seminars, etc.

Continue and expand Town-wide waste disposal events, such as:

Evaluate opportunities for Town facilities to reduce plastic and Styrofoam use, including plastic bags and disposable dinnerware, as a model to promote in the community.

Assist non-profits or businesses providing donation or composting drop-off sites by:
Identifying suitable locations.
Updating the zoning code to accommodate use while maintaining Oro Valley’s quality architectural aesthetic and site design standards.
Providing clear guidance on the zoning requirements and the permitting process.
